PENNSYLVANIA / RankWire.AI / – Pennsylvania officials have verified that a woman from Jefferson County, aged 40 and unvaccinated, died while infected with measles. Her death occurred on September 12 amid the state’s largest measles outbreak in over 30 years. Laboratory analysis identified the virus in a sample taken from her. After reviewing medical data, state authorities classified her passing as measles-related. This incident marked Pennsylvania’s third measles-associated death of 2026 and heightened concerns over the increasing number of cases throughout the state.

Pennsylvania measles cases hit 693 as death toll reaches four
Measles cases and hospitalizations continue across Pennsylvania during the 2026 outbreak.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office initially reported that complications linked to a probable measles infection contributed to her death. Later, laboratory confirmation verified an active measles infection. The woman had not received a measles vaccination. Authorities have not publicly identified her, citing privacy reasons for the family. Her case emerged during an outbreak affecting both children and adults. Measles can lead to severe illness, especially among those without immunity and individuals at higher risk of medical complications.

As of September 14, Pennsylvania had documented 693 confirmed measles cases across 38 counties. The Pennsylvania Department of Health also reported 133 hospitalizations related to the outbreak. Only four confirmed cases involved individuals considered appropriately vaccinated for their age. Data from the state indicate that most patients lacked full protection from the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine. Since cases began to increase during the spring, the outbreak has expanded across multiple communities, becoming one of the most significant measles events in the state in decades.

Pennsylvania reports four deaths related to measles

Health officials confirmed a fourth death linked to measles on September 15, involving an 18-year-old from Mifflin County who had not been vaccinated. The county coroner determined that acute disseminated encephalomyelitis was the cause of death, a rare neurological complication that can follow a measles infection. Pennsylvania had previously reported two measles-related deaths in Lancaster County on August 25, involving infants too young for routine vaccination. These fatalities marked the first measles-associated deaths in Pennsylvania in 35 years.

Measles spreads through the air when an infected individual coughs, sneezes or breathes. The virus can stay infectious in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours. Typical early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and red or watery eyes. Usually, a rash appears several days later, starting on the head and spreading downward. Symptoms may develop between seven and 21 days after exposure. Health officials advise anyone showing possible measles symptoms to contact a healthcare provider before seeking treatment at a clinic or hospital.

Measles cases in the US continue to rise

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported 3,294 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of September 10, 2026. By that date, 47 jurisdictions had documented cases. Federal data also reveal a decline in MMR vaccination coverage among kindergarteners, which dropped to 92.4% during the 2025-2026 school year, down from 95.2% in 2019-2020. Public health experts generally consider vaccination coverage above 95% essential to prevent sustained measles transmission within communities.

Public health guidelines state that two doses of the MMR vaccine offer roughly 97% protection against measles. The illness can lead to pneumonia, swelling of the brain, and other serious health issues. Pennsylvania officials report that nearly 20% of patients identified in the current outbreak have required hospitalization. Those who suspect they have been exposed should monitor for symptoms during the recommended period. Anyone experiencing symptoms is advised to contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital to allow staff to take precautions against further spread.
