SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – OpenAI is expanding access to ChatGPT for Free and Go members by removing the restrictions on text conversations under GPT-5.6 Luna. The company announced that unlimited text exchanges will start next week, with safety measures against misuse still in place. During this rollout, Luna also becomes the default model for these plans. At the same time, Free users will be introduced to a Think button, enabling the model to dedicate extra reasoning time to more complex questions before providing a response.

This increased limit pertains to standard text chats and does not extend to all features available within ChatGPT. Limitations will still be enforced on functions like image generation, file uploads, and other tools that demand additional computational resources. OpenAI mentioned that the Think button will be launched alongside the unlimited text access next week. Users will have the option to activate it when a question requires more extensive reasoning. This change broadens the core conversational capabilities for Free and Go accounts, while separate limits continue to apply to other tools and services.

GPT-5.6 includes multiple models, such as Luna, Sol, and Terra, each designed for different performance requirements. Luna serves as the faster and more budget-friendly option within this lineup. According to OpenAI, approximately one billion people now use ChatGPT weekly for activities like research, planning, writing, and searching. The recent update designates Luna as the primary ChatGPT model for Free and Go users. Other GPT-5.6 variants remain accessible within products tailored to various workloads and access levels.

Broader free access, with tool restrictions still in place

Subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Pro are now receiving an updated GPT-5.6 Sol model that handles routine tasks and complex reasoning more efficiently. The company states that Sol offers more targeted responses and minimizes unnecessary details when shorter replies are sufficient. Paid members also gain a reasoning slider across web, mobile, and desktop platforms, allowing them to control how much processing power the model applies. This feature is useful for tasks like research, coding, writing, and planning, which require different levels of reasoning.

OpenAI shared results from internal testing focused on the factual accuracy of its newest models. These assessments examined responses to financial, medical, and legal questions that demanded detailed factual information. The company found that answers containing at least one factual error were reduced by about 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna compared to GPT-5.5 Instant. Similarly, GPT-5.6 Sol demonstrated a decline of roughly 68% in errors under the same testing method. Improved performance was also noted in responses involving dates, numbers, sources, rules, and assumptions when these details impacted the final answer.

Enhanced protections for younger users included in new models

Safeguards have been added to the GPT-5.6 models to protect users believed to be under 18. These measures restrict content related to romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges, and claims that could potentially encourage users to substitute real-world relationships. Additional limits are in place for material involving sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods, and graphic violence. OpenAI explained that further evaluations have been introduced for responses involving minors. The same abuse prevention safeguards will remain active when unlimited text conversations become available to Free and Go accounts as part of the expanded ChatGPT access.

This rollout applies solely to the main ChatGPT service and does not affect other products utilizing GPT-5.6. The versions of GPT-5.6 Sol used in ChatGPT Work and Codex stay unchanged by this update. Currently, Plus and Pro users can access the updated Sol model along with its reasoning controls. Meanwhile, Free and Go users will see Luna as their default model this week. The unlimited conversations and Think button will be introduced next week, with separate limitations remaining on image generation, uploads, and other demanding tools.
