MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will limit the variety of Gemini models accessible to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without a Google AI subscription will only have access to Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. The ability to use Flash or Pro will be removed under the updated policy. Google outlined these modifications in revised support documentation for its consumer AI services. These regulations apply specifically to personal Google accounts, not those managed by workplaces or educational institutions.

Customers subscribing to Google AI Plus will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes take effect. However, their subscription will no longer include access to Pro. Google has not specified a universal date for the transition for all AI Plus subscribers. Instead, affected users will be notified via email about when their access will change. Meanwhile, subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will retain access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Designed for quick responses and everyday tasks, Flash-Lite is a streamlined Gemini model. Flash offers extra features while maintaining fast response times across a variety of requests. Pro caters to more complex workloads such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google states that this model can handle text, files, images, and video, all while applying deeper reasoning. Responses from Pro might take longer than those generated by other Gemini models due to their complexity.
Wider model access remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is introducing effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high for models available under a user’s plan. Higher effort settings allocate more resources, enabling the model to produce more detailed responses, but also consume more of the usage allowance. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will get access to Deep Think, a feature tailored for complex reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that employs maximum parallel reasoning when managing complicated requests.
These new restrictions follow previous modifications to how Gemini Apps track usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google implemented compute-based limits, with allowances resetting every five hours until weekly limits are met. The calculation factors in prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Advanced tools and premium models tend to use these allowances more quickly than basic requests. Additionally, Google applied these usage-limit rules to users under 18 on July 24.
Usage limits differ across Google AI subscription tiers
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to the service’s standard usage thresholds. AI Plus offers twice the regular allowance, while AI Pro increases it to four times that amount. AI Ultra provides either five times or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan. Tools such as Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can utilize larger portions of these limits. Consequently, paid plans not only expand model access but also come with higher usage caps.
The October updates specifically impact Gemini Apps used through personal Google accounts and do not regulate every Google AI service. Accounts managed through workplaces or educational institutions follow separate access rules, and developer services have their own policies. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI subscriptions via Gemini Apps and Google One. Starting October 9, free personal users will rely solely on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as these new access policies go into effect.
