INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA / RankWire.AI / – Indiana has experienced devastating flooding and severe storms that have claimed at least seven lives. The relentless rainfall caused rivers to overflow and inundated roads, residences, and businesses across the state. These intense weather conditions began on August 11 and persisted through multiple storm systems. Central and southern regions of Indiana saw some of the most significant flooding. Emergency responders dedicated days to rescue operations, evacuations, and damage assessments in the affected areas.

Authorities confirmed that among the victims were a 4-year-old boy, three men, and three women. The fatalities occurred in Delaware, Jennings, Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and Henry counties. Delaware County reported two deaths, with each of the other counties recording one. One of the latest victims was a 31-year-old cyclist found in Henry County after floodwaters compromised a segment of roadway.

The National Weather Service documented that certain regions received over 10 inches of rainfall during this event. As storms repeatedly swept across Indiana, river levels surged. The White River reached historic highs in Anderson and Noblesville, surpassing records set in 1913. Indianapolis experienced its most severe flooding in over thirty years, with water invading low-lying neighborhoods.

Floodwaters Prompt Rescue Operations and Evacuations

Rescue teams utilized boats to access residents trapped by rising waters in multiple communities. Local authorities directed or assisted with evacuations where streets and neighborhoods became dangerous. Noblesville reported approximately 170 evacuations over a 72-hour span, with more than 550 homes impacted by flooding. As conditions worsened, Indianapolis activated emergency shelters and dispatched rescue teams to areas near the White River.

Widespread power outages across Indiana resulted from the storms. Late Sunday, nearly 130,000 utility customers remained without electricity, following peak outages of nearly 300,000. Flooded roads, damaged bridges, and washed-out pavement affected several counties. As the White River crest receded, Indianapolis reopened floodgates, and crews continued inspecting public infrastructure while residents began cleaning up after the storm.

Federal Assistance Bolsters Emergency Response Efforts

Governor Mike Braun issued a disaster emergency declaration across Indiana as local response efforts faced overwhelming challenges. Subsequently, President Donald Trump approved a federal emergency declaration after Indiana requested federal aid. The Federal Emergency Management Agency is authorized to assist state, tribal, and local authorities under this declaration. Support from FEMA covers emergency activities needed to safeguard lives, public health, safety, and property. Meanwhile, state and local agencies continued their recovery efforts as floodwaters gradually receded.

By late Sunday, some river gauges showed signs of improvement from their peak levels, yet flooding remained a concern. The White River’s water levels dropped from major to moderate flood stage, but several monitoring points near Indianapolis still registered above flood levels. Damage assessments persisted across communities affected by flooding, road failures, and power outages. Residents began cleanup operations at homes, businesses, and public sites as Indiana started to recover from the intense weather system.
