RENO, NEVADA / RankWire.AI / – By late Tuesday, firefighters had increased containment of the Hawk Fire near Reno to 85%, with 47 homes and one commercial building confirmed destroyed. The wildfire, which rapidly advanced through arid terrain northwest of the city, burned an area of 15,067 acres. During the blaze, eight additional homes sustained severe damage. Seven individuals, including firefighters, were injured, but officials reported no fatalities. This latest property damage estimate follows a comprehensive review of neighborhoods affected since the fire’s onset Saturday.

Washoe County emergency teams examined the affected zones and documented recent losses across communities near the fire’s perimeter. The majority of destruction happened west of U.S. Highway 395, where the fire initially surged through populated areas. Search efforts in affected properties revealed no additional victims. Officials indicated the fire traveled approximately six miles within its first 24 hours. The rapid spread prompted evacuation orders across neighborhoods north and northwest of Reno.

Residents east of U.S. 395, totaling about 9,300 individuals, were allowed to return home on Tuesday as conditions improved. Around 5,000 people remained under evacuation orders during an afternoon briefing. Authorities eased restrictions in several areas as firefighting crews secured additional sections of the fire perimeter. Several roads reopened after closures disrupted travel around northern Reno. Returning residents faced damaged utilities, burned properties, and zones still requiring firefighter patrols and safety inspections.

Residents returning as containment efforts advance

The containment of the Hawk Fire remained at 15,067 acres, but efforts focused on strengthening barriers around the affected zones. Late Tuesday, officials reported a team of 586 personnel assigned to the incident, a reduction from earlier in the response. Crews continued searching for hotspots and reinforcing containment lines around neighborhoods impacted by the fire. The firefighting operation involved engines, aircraft, and teams from multiple U.S. states, with personnel from Australia and New Zealand also participating as firefighting efforts extended across northern Nevada.

While investigators have classified the Hawk Fire as human-caused, authorities have not disclosed whether it was accidental or deliberate. The fire ignited Saturday near the Somersett area and spread swiftly through dry vegetation. Strong winds initially propelled the flames toward communities in northwest Reno. As weather conditions improved, firefighting teams gained more control and expanded containment lines. No further details about the fire’s exact origin have been released by officials.

Fire response efforts remain active in affected regions

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency for Washoe County over the weekend as evacuation orders grew. This declaration directed state resources to support firefighting, public safety, and recovery operations. Emergency agencies coordinated support for residents who evacuated and for crews working in damaged communities. The declaration will stay in effect until August 29 unless officials decide to end it sooner. State and local authorities continued managing evacuation information and access to neighborhoods affected by the fire.

The Hawk Fire also caused damage to power infrastructure, including roughly 100 wooden utility poles along its path. Utility crews worked to restore power as more residents returned to areas that reopened. Firefighters remained on patrol Tuesday, inspecting damaged properties and monitoring conditions near containment zones. Officials continued adjusting evacuation zones as access improved. The confirmed toll included 47 homes destroyed, eight homes severely damaged, and one commercial building lost, with containment holding steady at 85%.
