NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Wednesday, Asian markets saw gold prices climb as U.S. Treasury yields declined, prompting traders to reassess the likelihood of an interest-rate increase in September. The spot price for gold increased by 0.2%, reaching $4,342.33 an ounce at 0030 GMT, rebounding after a significant drop in the previous session. Meanwhile, December U.S. gold futures decreased by 0.6% to $4,396.30. Ahead of the release of July’s Federal Reserve meeting minutes, the focus remained on the central bank’s policy outlook across precious metals markets.

Gold prices gain as Fed rate hike bets ease in US markets
Gold prices remain sensitive to U.S. yields and September rate expectations.

Gold had declined 1.1% to $4,364.90 per ounce late Tuesday following two days of gains. December futures settled 1.2% lower at $4,420.60. The downward move was driven by rising long-term bond yields in key markets. The U.S. 30-year Treasury yield reached 5.3371%, its highest point in nearly twenty years, before easing back to around 5.28% during Asian trading hours. Increasing yields tend to dampen bullion demand because gold does not generate interest or regular income.

Markets anticipating the Fed’s September meeting showed a reduction in rate hike expectations. Data from CME FedWatch indicated a 65% probability that policymakers will keep rates steady, while the chance of a quarter-point increase stood at 35%. Recent economic reports in the U.S. also pointed to job losses, softer inflation, and decreased retail spending in July. These figures now influence market perceptions of the upcoming policy decision as investors monitor inflation trends, employment figures, and borrowing costs.

Federal Reserve Meeting Minutes Highlight Policy Divisions

On July 29, the Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark federal funds target range at 3.50% to 3.75%, passing the decision with a 9-3 vote. The three members advocating for a quarter-point hike underscored internal disagreements within the policy committee. The central bank noted that economic activity continued to expand at a healthy rate, while inflation stayed above its 2% target. Additionally, employment conditions remained relatively stable, with job gains matching growth in the labor force.

The detailed record of the July meeting is scheduled for release at 1800 GMT on Wednesday, providing insight into the deliberations that led to the latest rate decision. The upcoming policy review is set for September 15-16. Investors are closely watching the delicate balance between inflationary pressures and signs of economic slowdown. Treasury yields remain a key factor influencing gold trading, as fluctuations in borrowing costs can swiftly impact demand for assets that do not offer interest payments.

Gold and Other Precious Metals Show Divergent Trends After Choppy Session

The early Wednesday trading session saw mixed results among precious metals. Silver slipped 0.5% to $62.99 an ounce, while platinum edged up by 0.3% to $1,717.03. Palladium declined 0.3% to $1,286.73. These movements followed a volatile period across commodities and fixed-income markets. The early rebound in gold only partially offset Tuesday’s decline, with rising bond yields continuing to influence investor positioning in metals and other rate-sensitive assets.

After a relatively stable July, gold entered August with consistent investment demand, reflected in exchange-traded products. The World Gold Council reported that global gold ETFs experienced net inflows of $3 billion during July. Total holdings increased by 23 metric tons to 4,068 tons, while assets under management rose 1% to $530 billion. Gold prices remain tightly linked to U.S. interest-rate expectations, Treasury yields, inflation data, and the timing of future monetary policy moves.
